Julian: Did you watch the Oscars this year?
Thea: Not in full—just a few clips online highlighting the best moments. The results were all over the news so it didn’t make much sense to watch it in its entirety.
Julian: I see what you mean. Did you see the part when Kathryn Bigelow won?
Thea: Yes, she was amazing. Can you believe that in 82 years, she is the first female Director to win an Oscar?
Julian: I think she said it best when she said, ‘There’s no other way to describe it. It’s the moment of a lifetime.’
Thea: Did you see how her ex-husband joined in on the standing ovation for her?
Julian: No, who’s her ex-husband?
Thea: You know the guy that was seated behind her? He worked on Avatar .
Julian: Oh, you mean James Cameron? I didn’t realise that they were married.
Thea: Yes, that’s his name. They were just married for a few years—from ’89 to ‘91 or something like that.
Julian: Interesting. Have you seen The Hurt Locker ?
Thea: Not yet, actually. But since it’s won Best Picture and five other awards, I think I’m going to have to see it. How about you?
Julian: Yes, I saw it a while ago. It was good, but I’m not that into war dramas, so I was actually hoping that Avatar would have won the Best Picture award.
Thea: You know, I didn’t really care for Avatar . Of course, I didn’t see it in 3D, so maybe that’s why I wasn’t as impressed as other people were.
Julian: Perhaps. What did you think about who won for best actress?
Thea: I absolutely love Sandra Bullock—I think she’s a fabulous actress, so I was really pleased that she won for The Blind Side . And Jeff Bridges won as best actor for Crazy Heart —that was very predictable.
Julian: Another not-so-surprising win was Up —it earned the third straight feature-animation Oscar for Disney’s Pixar Animation.
Thea: Yes, I heard that Pixar has now won five of the nine awards since the category was added by the Academy of…I forget what they’re called…
Julian: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences?
Thea: Yes, that’s the one.
Julian: You know, going back to Avatar and The Hurt Locker , it’s interesting that you and I both backed the two films that tied for the Oscar lead!
Thea: You’re right—they both won nine nominations each. Maybe they should invite us to the next Academy Awards!
Julian: Wouldn’t that be a treat?
